Sioen “Hedland”, een van onze bestsellers!

When it comes to keeping people safe, there should be no compromise. Sioen has been developing professional protective clothing since the 1960’s, with the emphasis always on safety, quality and durability.

The importance of professional protective clothing

The EU has aligned laws on professional protective clothing, translated into numerous standards. These are technical specifications defining requirements for products, production processes, services or test-methods.

Because our garments are often life-critical, they are submitted to very strict norms and regulations. Our garments are Personal protective equipment (PPE) and protect against hazards at work. Statistics on fatal and major work accidents underline the importance of protection and prevention, for which personal protective equipment plays an important role (source: (link: https://ec.europa.eu/growth/sectors/mechanical-engineering/personal-protective-equipment_en text: EU))

Of course, there are multiple levels of risk. Since the very existence of the Sioen brand, we’ve been specialising in all these norms and regulations, making our garments outstanding. PPE products are classified into categories, depending upon the level of risk associated with their use.

The first category is designed to protect users against minimal risks such as superficial mechanical injury, contact with water, hot surfaces (up to 50°C), exposure to sunlight and any normal atmospheric condition.

The second category includes safety spectacles and goggles, helmets and bump caps and hi visibility clothing.

The third category is designed to protect against risks that may cause serious consequences such as death or irreversible damage to health. Examples are chemicals, extreme-temperature environments, radiation, electric shocks, risk of drowning, cuts by chainsaws, bullet wounds and knife stabs.

In the sioen apparel range we have 7 brands, each with their own specialty, thus covering all risks in any working condition. For this article, we chose to highlight the multinorm range, with emphasis on flame retardant anti-static garments.

FRAST

Antistatic garments or antistatic clothing are required to prevent damage to electrical components and/or to people and to prevent fires and explosions when working with flammable liquids and gases.

In some working conditions, simple actions such as friction created by the people’s movement, bodies coming in contact with each other, leaking gas, dust flying around, may cause an explosion, harming the person. In other situations, harm might be caused to the sensitive electrical components which workers are dealing with.

As a worker in these conditions, you could always be the human trigger and directly exposed to the dangerous consequences of an uncontrolled electrostatic discharge.

The norm EN 1149/5 defines electrostatic properties for protective clothing. It is very important that the protective clothing that is worn complies to this exacting norm defining material performance and design requirements.

The norm EN ISO 14116 defines the protection for workers exposed to flame (excluding fire-fighting and welders clothing). It protects the user against incidental and short-term contact with small flames in circumstances where there is no significant heat hazard and without the presence of another type of heat. Protective clothing in accordance with EN ISO 14116 may consist of several separate garments or one garment with one or more layers.
